What We Do

Conservation partners have been working together in Wolastoq / Saint John River Priority Place for many years

Our Collaborative Approach

Conservation partners have been working together in Wolastoq / Saint John River Priority Place for many years. The Priority Place Initiative provides an opportunity for a more targeted and collaborative approach to transform the way we have been doing Species at Risk conservation, to help us achieve better outcomes.

We are using Conservation Standards as an adaptive management framework to support more coordinated, strategic action to achieve our shared conservation goals in Wolastoq.

The framework supports an ecosystem-based approach, whereby Species at Risk and other species of cultural significance or conservation concern are nested within the ecosystem-based conservation targets.

Conservation Targets

Targets are the values, features, and assets that are important to conserve in the Priority Place. They are where we want to work collaboratively in adopting ecosystem-based approaches with an emphasis on implementation. Given that there are multiple priorities identified for Wolastoq / Saint John River Priority Place, it is recognized that the level of focus and emphasis will vary by target.

The Wolastoq  / Saint John River, with its intrinsic cultural value, habitat for aquatic species such as Atlantic Salmon, and integral part of all related ecosystems, is a key conservation target and thus included in the priorities list below. Recognizing, however, that the focus for this Priority Place initiative will be on conservation action implementation benefiting terrestrial Species at Risk, in upland and riparian ecosystems, rather than direct aquatic conservation actions.

The overall health of the river and aquatic species will benefit from these conservation actions, and linkages will be made with aquatic conservation initiatives
